Paddy, with his characteristic mop of thick long blond hair, will be fondly remembered as the barrel-chested Jean-Pierre Rives lookalike, a robust wing forward who played for the club straight from Bangor Grammar School from the mid-70s to mid-80s. Well-liked by all who knew and played with him, Paddy was a regular 2nds and 3rds player who was good enough to represent the 1st XV on occasions, most notably as part of the Bangor squad that won the Ulster Senior Cup in the 1979-80 season. Sadly, Paddy suffered ill health for several years which limited his mobility but didn’t deter his enthusiasm for life and enjoying the good company of friends. To Paddy’s wife Caroline, children and grandchildren, we extend our deepest sympathy. An open Memorial Tribute for Paddy will be held in S Clarke and Son’s Funeral Church, Newtownards Road, Bangor on Saturday 27th August at 11am. At the family’s request, attendees may dress casually.
Robin Simms will be remembered more by the sailing fraternity at the Club, a sport to which he devoted all of his adult life after playing rugby for Bangor in the 1950s until his retirement from rugby in the early 1960s. The highlight of Robin’s rugby career must surely have been when he played for the 1st XV in the 1955-56 season Towns Cup winning team as a back row forward alongside such Club stalwarts as Joe Upritchard and the late Ronnie Boston and Arthur Robinson, in an era when Bangor played in Section C of the then Junior League. His son John also played for Bangor’s junior teams for a few seasons in the early 1980s before being lured, like his father, to sailing. To Robin’s wife Nan, his son John and daughter-in-law Julia; his daughter Cathryn, and his grandchildren, we extend our deepest sympathy. A memorial service will be held for Robin in First Bangor Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Bangor on Wednesday 31st August at 1:00pm.
